    • This batch of Gui Fei Oolong earned the silver prize in the prestigious spring tea competition held in Lugu (Deer Valley) township, a region renowned for its exceptional teas. Highlighting the rich roasting aroma and a velvety, rounded texture in the tea soup, this tea exemplifies the masterful roasting craftsmanship deeply rooted in Lugu's tradition. A delicate hint of honey lingers in the background, adding an elegant layer of complexity to the classic medium-roasted Dong Ding Oolong profile.

The primary aroma is a clean and refined roasted note, evocative of Longyan charcoal. Upon sipping, the tea reveals a gentle honeyed sweetness in its middle notes, seamlessly complementing the signature floral and woody base of Dong Ding Oolong. The aftertaste is smooth, full-bodied, and enduring, leaving a deeply satisfying impression.

This Gui Fei Oolong is crafted from a single cultivar: Chin-Shin Oolong. Unlike other versions of Gui Fei that might blend multiple cultivars to replicate the honeyed sweetness caused by the bites of little green leafhoppers, this tea showcases the purity and elegance of a single varietal. Roasting a single cultivar to perfection requires a high degree of skill and precision to preserve its nuanced aroma and subtle sweetness.

For roasted Oolong enthusiasts seeking an added layer of subtle honeyed complexity, this award-winning competition tea promises a unique and delightful experience.

    Behind This Tea

In 1999, a powerful earthquake struck Taiwan, causing significant damage and disrupting local agriculture, including tea plantations. During the recovery period, many tea gardens were left unattended, allowing nature to take its course.

A particular species of tiny insect known as the tea leafhopper (Jacobiasca formosana) began to infest the tea leaves. The bites from these insects initiated a unique chemical reaction in the tea leaves. The plant’s natural defense mechanism produced a honey-like aroma and flavor.

The tea's name, inspired by the famous Chinese historical figure Yang Guifei, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, adds to its allure and prestige. Today, Gui Fei Oolong is celebrated as one of Taiwan’s most premium teas. Its production requires a delicate balance of natural influences and skilled craftsmanship. The tea is often featured in tea competitions and is a symbol of resilience and innovation in Taiwanese tea culture.
