    • Exquisite Black Hagi Yunomi Handcrafted in Hagi, Yamaguchi-pref., Japan by Eiichi Shibuya of Odaibagama kiln

This unique kuro-hagi (black Hagi) yunomi is crafted by the acclaimed potter Shibuya Eiichi. Born in 1979, Eiichi is the grandson and disciple of the renowned Shibuya Deishi, a prominent figure in the world of Hagi pottery and former president of the Hagi Traditional Craft Association. Their kiln, O-daiba, is situated in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, a region with a rich history in pottery.

This yunomi is meticulously wheel-thrown and hand-carved, embodying the 'mentori' technique—an artful method of slicing and shaping by cutting. The rugged exterior and the distinctive black glaze, which transitions to blue due to the firing process, make this piece extraordinarily unique. Such transformations in the glaze occur because of variations in the base ingredients during firing.

      Legacy and Technique

Eiichi continues the legacy of his grandfather, Shibuya Deishi, who studied under Living National Treasure Kyusetsu Miwa X. The similarities in their work, particularly in the white straw ash glaze, highlight the transmission of traditional techniques to newer generations, ensuring the continuous renewal of Hagi pottery's rich heritage

      Achievements of Eiichi Shibuya

Eiichi's accolades reflect his mastery and dedication to his craft:
      - **2010:** Selected for the Hagi City Art Exhibition.
      - **2012:** Selected for the Tanabe Museum "Tea Ceremony Formative Arts Exhibition."
      - **2018:** Grand Prize at the 5th Toubiten.
      - **2018:** Received the Distinguished Service for Culture Award from Yamaguchi Prefecture.
      - **Numerous Selections:** Including the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition and other prestigious events

      Shibuya Deishi

Shibuya Deishi, born in 1961, began his pottery career in 1979 and has established himself as a leading figure in Hagi pottery. Known for his oni-Hagi works and straw-ash glazed chawan, Deishi's creations are celebrated among tea enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. He has garnered numerous awards, including the International Art Culture Award in 1984, and his works are regularly featured in prominent exhibitions

      The Charm of Hagi-Ware

Hagi-yaki pottery is prized for its simplicity, a trait derived from its distinctive clay and glazing techniques. The rough texture and permeable nature of Hagi clay result in pieces that evolve in color and tone with use, enhancing the tea-drinking experience. This yunomi, in perfect condition and complete with its original paulownia wooden tomobako (storage box) with Eiichi's stamp, is a testament to this enduring tradition.

Explore this exceptional piece and bring a touch of Hagi's rich pottery heritage into your daily drinking rituals.
